The Unseen Reality of Maintenance Proceedings

During our court visit for the Family Law workshop, I got to sit through a maintenance case. What caught my attention was the way the court assessed the income of the respondent (husband). Our textbook mentions the guidelines for monthly income but it didn't prepare me for the messy reality of actual income assessment.

What I observed was that the court looked into various sources of income, including unaccounted money, share market profits, and even property rents. This made me realize that the concept of "income" in maintenance laws is not as straightforward as it seems. It was also interesting to see how the court tried to quantify the husband's contributions to the household, like his role in managing the family business. This practical exposure was a far cry from the theoretical discussions in our textbooks.
