The 'Basic Structure' Doctrine: A Wicket to Keep!

Imagine cricket's rules are being rewritten by a rogue ICC. They start saying, "We're introducing a new rule – the team can now bowl the ball from the boundary!" But, the cricketers say, "Dude, that's not cricket! This is basic cricket we're talking about!" They're saying the basic structure of the game - what makes it cricket, not some other sport - can't be changed like that.

Similarly, in the Basic Structure Doctrine, the Supreme Court says that certain fundamental aspects of the Constitution (like the principles of democracy, equality, etc.) are non-negotiable. They can't be changed or altered by just any ordinary law. It's like, the Constitution's basic framework is so important that even Parliament can't just rewrite it willy-nilly. The Court has to ensure that these essential principles are protected, or else it's just not the same Constitution anymore!
