Section 66D: The Obsolete 'Cyber Crime' of Sending 'Offensive Messages'

cyber clat_ug advanced reform_idea

Ye toh pura saamna hai 2025 ke. Section 66D of the IT Act, 2000 still criminalizes sending 'offensive messages through a computer or communication device' with a maximum 3-year sentence. Yeh kya hai? It was enacted at a time when SMSes and Facebook comments were the only game in town. Ab humare paas TikTok, Twitter, aur Instagram hai, par yeh provision kuch bhi nahin ho gaya.

This section is ripe for reform. In 2025, a 'cyber crime' that's not even a crime in real life? It's like trying to apply the Arms Act to a cricket bat. Har kisano ko ek 'offensive message' bhejna hai, to bas woh karega hi kya?

Yaar, aapko pata hai Section 66D ka purana name tha 'punishable for sending offensive messages from emails etc using computers' thoda sa aur sabhi samajh rahein? Lekin yeh 2013 mein SC ne IPC section 500 aur 500A tak reduce kar diya, aur Section 66D ko 'punishable for sending offensive messages through electronic means' me chala gaya. Abhi bhi koi case hai, to aapko lagta hai?
