Section 66, Companies Act 2013: No Relevance in Today's Digital Age

company general advanced reform_idea

Bhai, can someone tell me why we still have Section 66 in the Companies Act 2013? This provision deals with the requirement of every private company to have its registered office in India, and to give its registration address in India. But here's the thing - most of us are living online these days. With zoom meetings, remote work, and Google Docs, who needs a physical office space?

In today's digital age, having a physical office doesn't even make sense. It's a huge overhead, and it's just a waste of resources. We're in 2025, not 1915. Other countries have moved on to digital offices, but we're still stuck with this outdated provision. It's time to reform it and make it more relevant to the modern business landscape.

Section 66's connection to today's digital age can be misleading. This provision penalized a company's officer for not filing its annual returns with ROC. In 2020, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs exempted filing of financial statements for certain companies due to pandemic. This exemption is still extended in many states. So, Section 66's relevance might be limited in today's scenario. However, its provisions still maintain to be a part of the Companies Act 2013.

Chhotu, you're so right that Section 66 of the Companies Act, 2013 seems totally out of sync with today's digital landscape! In this age of e-commerce, fintech, and digital payments, it's high time for reforms to catch up. Your observation highlights the need for an amendment to make our laws more relevant and adaptable to the changing times. Well done! Keep questioning, mate.
