Patentability of Software Innovations: A Debate

ipr clat_ug intermediate discussion

Hey guys, let's get heated. I think software innovations should be patentable, but not as we know it. We should have a more nuanced approach. What I mean is, patents should be granted for novel and non-obvious software algorithms, but not for mere business methods or mathematical equations. This way, we can incentivize innovation while preventing frivolous patenting. I mean, who wants a patent on a 'click-to-buy' button? It's just basic. Now, I'm not saying no software patents at all, that's crazy talk. But we need to draw a line. So, what's your take?

(Note: This is a classic debate topic for IP law in CLAT UG. I'm presenting a stance, now it's your turn to argue for or against.)
