Is India's Copyright Regime Overprotective?

Yeh topic kuch din pehle discuss hua tha coaching class mein. Jab tum log mock tests dete ho, I'm at my shift. Anyways, India's Copyright Act, 1957, has been criticized for being overprotective. Section 52(1) provides an exception for fair dealing, but it's limited to private use for research or education, which hardly covers criticism, review, or parody.

Section 51(2) further restricts the scope of fair dealing by not allowing reproduction of a substantial part of the work. This is problematic as it can stifle creative freedom and hinder public discourse. The Indian regime is more in line with Western copyright laws, which have evolved to give more leeway to fair use. The question is, do we need an update in our copyright laws to make them more flexible and aligned with modern digital realities?
