Doubt Alert: "Separation of Powers" vs "Checks and Balances

Yaar samajh nahi aaya! I'm having a serious brain fog over the difference between Separation of Powers and Checks and Balances in Constitutional Law. Both concepts seem to deal with the division of power between the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. But what's the real distinction? According to my text, Separation of Powers is about creating separate departments for law-making, law-execution, and law-interpretation to prevent any one branch from becoming too powerful. On the other hand, Checks and Balances is about providing each branch with some degree of control over the other two branches so that no single branch can dominate the others. But how do these concepts actually play out in practice? Please help, I'm totally confused - kya to dono hi ek hi cheez hai?
