Definition of "Cognizance" in CrPC

Mainly textbooks explain 'cognizance' as the act of court taking up a case. But honestly, it's not that straightforward. In real life, it's the stage after the police has filed an FIR and the court has accepted it. At this point, the court examines the charges, decides if they're valid, and fixes a date for trial. So, it's more like the court gives a green signal to proceed with the case. Can someone please share a good example or real-life scenario where "cognizance" played an important role in a court case?
